First Reading: Numbers 11:4-15 |
Moses cried out in frustration that he must carry the Israelites in his bosom like a mother… Why must he be responsible for such complaining people? Instead of thanking God for providing them Manna in the desert, for not allowing them to die in hunger, they complained endlessly. Why was there no meat! The disciples from the Gospel, on the other hand, told Jesus that they should send the crowds away so they can look for food themselves. But Jesus said no! He said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." Do it yourselves.
Leaders must take care and carry their members. Children must share the responsibilities of family life. Friends must sometimes share the load of friends in need. Jesus emptied Himself. He carried us so all of us may be made worthy of life with Him. And since no servant is greater than his master, all those who profess faith in Him must take His lead--not merely to be popular and gain affections or approval (because in following Jesus, one must sometimes challenge and correct what is accepted, fun, or easy.)
It would be hard or heavy at times (or most of the time) but God will provide so they can provide, too; nourishment for both body and spirit. He will supply all that is needed--patience, strength, finances, love, time, wisdom, humility… and tons more of patience--for in the end, leaders are but line leaders... and the Shepherd remains the head of the flock. All must follow. And all will be fed and taken care for.
The heavier the cross, the stronger one becomes. Without the cross, there will be no salvation. Embrace it. Do not be afraid, for God promised "the yoke I will give you is easy, and my burden light…" He equips whom He calls.
How is God speaking to you today? What cross must you carry?
